Amphion Selects Durham Scientific Crystals as a Partner Company
New York, NY, April 18, 2005 - Amphion Capital Partners, LLC (“Amphion”) is delighted to announce that Durham Scientific Crystals, Ltd. (“DSC”) is now a new partner company of Amphion. DSC represents Amphion’s first UK partner company, and as such, is especially significant to us. DSC is a spin-out of the University of Durham, one of the most highly rated universities in the UK. The company is now located in Sedgefield, England and is developing next-generation proprietary products and processes for the rapidly growing optoelectronic materials in the semiconductor industry for medical and security applications.
Medical and security imaging markets continue to be high growth billion dollar markets on a global basis. The demand for advanced and efficient optoelectronic materials continues to be a high growth area in semiconductor materials and devices. Increasing world wide demand for medical and security imaging equipment remains at an all time high. These technologies that include digital radiography (DR), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), explosive detectors and nuclear radiation detectors. Medical and security imaging equipment shipments are over $3 billion per annum in the US and $5.5 billion per annum worldwide.
Amphion previously participated successfully in this industry with its former partner company, Vortech Data, which became a leader in digital image management systems for CTs and MRIs. Amphion was a co-founder of Vortech, provided and obtained all the funding and actively participated in the management and growth of the company. Amphion assisted in the development of a strategic partnership with Eastman Kodak and subsequently worked closely with the management in the sale of the company to Kodak for $130 million.
Amphion has remained interested in the medical imaging industries as a high growth opportunity and sees DSC in an excellent position to build a major business. Amphion has made an initial investment in DSC and will work with DSC as a partner company to assemble the resources necessary to grow the business. We are very excited about DSC’s proprietary technologies for new semiconductor materials and the expert team assembled to access a number of large opportunities in the high growth imaging and security space. DSC has completed its initial product and process development phase and is poised to start shipping sample product in the very near future. The company recently moved into new facilities in NetPark, the prestigious new science park facility located close to Durham, in the North of England.
Dr. Arnab Basu, the Managing Director, with background in sensors and electronic materials industry, and Prof Max Robinson with previous experience of successful IPO of a previous technology company, have driven DSC to its present stage. Amphion is particularly excited about DSC’s current and future opportunities in the rapidly growing semiconductors for the medical and security imaging industries and we will keep you informed of developments taking place at DSC. Last week DSC was awarded the accolade of the Durham and Wearside Technology Company of the year by Newcastle Chronicle and Journal and a news article describing DSC’s exciting opportunity was also published this week and referenced below with DSC’s website.
We continue to believe that UK university spin-outs offer great opportunity for Amphion. We see great leverage in combining our company building experience and US presence with some of the world’s best sources of innovative discoveries and intellectual property. We are delighted to be able to start our company-building activity in the UK with such an exciting opportunity as DSC.
